How often should you tone blonde hair?

Toning is what keeps blonde looking bright instead of brassy. Here's what it does, how often to do it, and how to stretch it at home.

Why blonde turns brassy

When hair is lightened, the process exposes underlying warm pigments. Over the following weeks, minerals in your water, sun exposure, heat styling, and even some shampoos let those yellow and orange tones come forward. That gradual warming is what most people mean when they say their blonde has gone brassy.

What toning actually does

A toner or gloss deposits a sheer, translucent color that neutralizes those unwanted warm tones and evens everything out. It does not lighten your hair; it corrects and refreshes the tone you already have, and it adds a noticeable shine. Because it is gentle and quick, it is a much smaller commitment than a full color appointment.

How often should you tone?

As a general guide, most people refresh a toner every four to eight weeks. The lighter and cooler you want your blonde, the more often you will notice warmth creeping back, so platinum and icy tones sit at the shorter end and warmer, beige blondes can go longer. How much you swim, sun, and heat-style matters too.

Stretching it at home with purple shampoo

A purple or blue toning shampoo used once or twice a week counteracts brassiness between salon visits. The trick is not to overdo it: leave it on for the time on the label, and alternate with your regular color-safe shampoo so hair does not go dull or over-toned. Your stylist can recommend the right one for your exact shade.

When to book a gloss

When at-home care is not keeping up, or before an event when you want your blonde looking its freshest, a salon gloss is the fastest reset. Ask us to add one to your next appointment, or book a standalone gloss online.
