How to make your hair color last longer between visits

A few simple habits, starting with how often you wash, keep salon color brighter for weeks longer. Here's what actually helps.

Wash less often, and cooler

Color fades a little with every shampoo, so washing less is the single most effective thing you can do. Most color-treated hair looks best washed two to three times a week. Use cooler water when you do, since hot water opens the cuticle and lets color rinse out faster. Dry shampoo helps stretch the days in between.

Use color-safe products

A sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and conditioner are worth it. Sulfates are harsh cleansers that strip color quickly. For blondes and toned hair, an occasional purple shampoo keeps brassiness in check between salon visits.

Protect against heat and sun

Always use a heat protectant before hot tools, and keep the temperature moderate. Sun exposure fades color too, so a hat or a UV-protecting product helps on bright days, including the ones out on the lake.

Refresh with a gloss

A quick gloss or toner appointment revives shine and tone without a full color service, and it is an easy way to keep things looking fresh between bigger appointments. Ask us about adding one to your next visit.
