Your first wax: what to expect and how to prepare
Nervous about your first wax? Here's exactly what to expect, how to prep, and how long the smooth results actually last.
Before your appointment
For the best result, hair should be about a quarter of an inch long, roughly two weeks of growth, so the wax can grip it. Gently exfoliating a day or two beforehand helps, and if you are worried about sensitivity, an over-the-counter pain reliever taken about half an hour before can take the edge off.
What actually happens
Most waxing appointments are quick, often 15 to 20 minutes depending on the area. There is a brief sting as the wax is removed, followed by soothing pressure. It is over faster than most first-timers expect, and your provider will talk you through each step.
How long it lasts
Results typically last three to four weeks. Your very first wax may grow back a little sooner because hairs are on different cycles, but with regular appointments the regrowth becomes finer and more even over time, and often sparser.
Aftercare
Skin can be slightly pink for a few hours. Avoid heat, heavy workouts, and tight friction for about a day, and keep exfoliating gently between appointments to help prevent ingrown hairs.
